Contraindications of Massage

Contraindications are conditions in which massage has the potential to cause harm or make the condition worse.

General Contraindications

These conditions affect, or have the potential to affect, the entire body. For this reason, massage is contraindicated for the entire body.

  • Nervous system disease*
  • Cardiovascular disease
  • Infectious disease

Local and Regional Contraindications

These conditions only affect specific areas of the body. These areas must be avoided, but the rest of the body may be massaged.

  • Benign tumors
  • Nervous system disease*
  • Skin disorders
  • Bleeding
  • Acute inflammation

*Nervous system disease can be either a general or a local contraindication, depending on whether the disease affects the entire nervous system or a smaller area.
